Liposuction is the cosmetic procedure that removes excess and unwanted fat from various parts of the body. It serves to not only slim one’s profile but creates better symmetry, proportion and overall aesthetic appearance.
These procedures can be performed alone or in conjunction with various other cosmetic procedures such as a tummy tuck or breast reduction.
Who is a Good Candidate?
Those who are in overall good health, are nonsmokers and interested in eliminating excess fat in one or several areas of their body are likely to be excellent candidates for liposuction. Great candidates also include those who are committed to a healthy lifestyle and have done all they can to lose excess weight through diet and exercise.
Liposuction is not a substitute for proper diet and exercise and should not be used as one’s primary method of weight loss. The appearance of cellulite or the removal of loose, saggy skin cannot be improved with liposuction alone. However, other techniques may help in these areas.
The Liposuction Procedure
After discussing your desired outcome and expectations with Dr. Silver, a surgical date will be made, and preparations will begin.
Preparing for the surgery will likely include pictures to document the transition. Labs and a complete physical exam may also be required to detect any pre-existing conditions in case special considerations need to be taken.
Liposuction procedures are performed under general anesthesia in a safe and controlled environment like the hospital or accredited surgical facility. Small, barely visible incisions are all that’s needed to perform liposuction. Local anesthesia is also used to control bleeding and reduce trauma to the area. Fat is then suctioned out of the area through a thin, hollow tube that is inserted into the small incision sites.
The duration of the procedure depends on the size of the area to be treated and whether or not any other procedures are also being performed.
Results and Recovery
The final results from any liposuction procedure will be visible once the swelling from the procedure has subsided. The swelling usually resolves within the first couple of weeks but may be longer if other surgeries were performed in conjunction with the liposuction. Liposuction results are long term as long as you maintain a stable weight and overall good health.
Overall benefits of Liposuction include:
- Slimmer profile
- More proportionate body contours
- Improved body image and self-confidence
- Corrected asymmetry
