Breast Reduction in Cambridge, MA

Breast reduction surgery is performed to reduce the size of uncomfortably large breasts. Large, sagging breasts can cause back pain, unwanted attention or interfere with daily activities such as exercising and even sleeping. To see other breast procedure options, click here!

Who is a Good Candidate?

The best candidates for breast reduction surgery are those with fully developed breasts who are interested in reducing discomfort from large breasts, want to improve the balance of their body contour and are in overall good health.

Women who intend on breastfeeding may choose to wait until after having children before undergoing breast reduction surgery as the procedure can pose challenges to breastfeeding. Although breast reduction surgery can be done in young individuals if the pain is significant, it is best to wait until the breasts are fully developed.

The Procedure

After a thorough discussion of your options, desired outcome, and expectations, you and Dr. Silver will determine the best way to undergo your breast reduction surgery.

Several steps are involved in the planning portion of this procedure including pictures and sometimes a mammogram, depending on your age.

The surgery is typically performed in an outpatient surgical center or hospital under general anesthesia. The average operative time for breast reduction surgery is two hours.

Once you are asleep, Dr. Silver will make the necessary incisions and gently remove the unwanted breast tissue and attached skin. The remaining skin and tissues are then repositioned for the most attractive appearance.

Results and Recovery

After the procedure, an elastic bandage or support bra will minimize swelling and provide comfort to the healing breast. Pain from the surgery can be expected for the first few days, and your surgeon will advise you on how to manage it. Strenuous activity should be avoided for a few weeks, and even sex may be restricted for the first week or two due to the changes in breast tissue and nipples with sexual arousal.

Be sure to ask Dr. Silver when it will be safe to resume certain activities. Also, pay attention to all post-op instructions and keep planned follow up visits for optimal healing and results.

Once the initial swelling has resolved, usually after just a few weeks, the results of the breast reduction surgery can be visible.

Overall benefits from breast reduction surgery include:

  • Better proportionate body contour
  • Less pain or discomfort in back
  • Improved comfort during sleep, exercise, and other daily activities
  • Better fitting shirts and other clothing
  • Improved self-confidence and body image
